Some notes for creating a testing environment for Ruby on Rails web developement using Michael Hartl's book "Ruby on Rails Tutorial 2nd edition"

Install git:

root# yum install git

Install Ruby version manager:

root# \curl -sSL"> | bash -s stable

Added "trevor" (my regular user to the rvm group

user$ rvm install 1.9.3

This installs the 1.9.3 version of ruby
Started a new shell

user$ ruby -v

This shows that ruby is installed and the version

root# gem update --system 1.8.24

This updates ruby gems to the correct version for the tutorial

user$ gedit ~/.gemrc

This creates a gem configuration file in the home directory with the following lines

install: --no-rdoc --no-ri
update: --no-rdoc --no-ri

Install rails:

user$ gem install rails -v 3.2.3

Installs rails, to chec your installation do the following

user$ rails -v


mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR 'root'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('newpwd');
